United Nations Secretary-General's Special Representative for Somalia James Swan has congratulated the people and government of Somalia on the 62nd anniversary, when southern regions gained independence and the unification of north and south in 1960. Swan reiterated the United Nations’ continued commitment to supporting the Federal Government of Somalia, the Federal Member States, and the people of Somalia in their endeavour to build a more peaceful and prosperous future for their country. The UN has been providing critical support to the fragile government of Somalia in various fields including security and building of a stable government. The UN has been involved in the mitigation of the ongoing devastating drought in the East African Nation which has decimated crops and livestock even sparked human death. Somalia is currently experiencing the worst drought in four decades following the failure of four consecutive rainy seasons.
