President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud leads the country in marking independence day

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has on Thursday night led an event to mark 1st July, when southern regions of the country got independence and the Union of north and south, in 1960. Prime minister Hamza Abdi Barre, Speakers of both houses of Federal Parliament and other distinguished dignitaries attended the ceremony. Thousands of Somalis across the Horn of Africa Nation celebrated the event with pomb and dance as they wore blue and white – colours of the Somali flag. Speaking at the event, President Mohamud urged the Somali people to be united and live peacefully among each other. Mohamud also noted that the country is in a difficult period as the drought continues to ravage across the East African Nation and called for a combined efforts to mitigate the drought. The Independence Day of Somalia is a national holiday observed annually in Somalia on July 1. The date celebrates the unification of the Trust Territory of Italian Somaliland and the British Somaliland on July 1, 1960, which formed the Somali Republic.
