President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulates Somali people on the occasion of June 26 celebrations
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has on Saturday congratulated the people of Somalia on the June 26 independence day celebrations. President Mohamud in statement posted on Villa Somalia said the independence day celebrations inculcates in us the urge to make amends on the misdeeds that the country experienced in the past years. The President who is currently isolating himself after testing positive for COVID-19 urged the Somali people to observe peace and live in cohesion. The speaker of the House of People Sheikh Adan Madobe Les the event on Saturday to commemorate the independence days when the northern regions gained independence from the British colonizers. The celebrations were held across the country. Members of parliament from the House of the People (Lower House) and the Senate (Upper House) attended the celebrations. Newly sworn-in Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre was also in attendance. Somalia Independence Day is observed annually on June 26. During the 19th century, Britain established a protectorate over a large part of Somalia, and it became known as British Somaliland. In the 1920s, Italy took over the north-eastern sultanates of the country, forming Italian Somaliland.
