Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud tests positive for COVID-19

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has tested positive for the novel COVID-19. The Somali President confirmed his positive test on his official social media handles on Friday, June 24 upon returning from the UAE. Mohamud, who has been on an official working visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the better part of this week, confirmed that he will continue to serve the Nation from his home. Consequently, President Mohamud assured Somali people that he is in stable condition and has no severe symptoms. He added that he would be self-isolating himself to minimize chances of spreading the global virus to his family and members of his staff Mohamud called on the Somali people to keep themselves safe from the virus by observing and adhering to the established public health guidelines to prevent the spread of the pandemic. "My fellow citizens, I would like to inform you that today I tested positive for COVID-19. So far, I have no symptoms but I will continue to self-isolate and serve the people of Somalia from home. I ask we all keep each other safe by following public health advise and guidelines." he said on Twitter. His confirmation of his positivity comes against the backdrop of reports in the media few days ago that some members of his accompanying delegation had tested positive for COVID-19 and were placed in quarantine. However, the Somali government did not officially comment on the reports.
