Somali National Army SNA Chief Gen.Odowa Yussuf Rage closes a three day conference for senior military officers focusing on elimination of Al-Shabab and take over from ATMIS forces
Senior military officers drawn from the Somali National Army (SNA) have partaken in a conference that came to a close in Mogadishu on Thursday. Somali National Army Commander Brig. Gen. Odawaa Yusuf Rage, chaired the conference that ran from June 21-23. The senior military officers discussed range of important issues during the 3-day conference. Some of the issues that featured in the discussions included the country’s operational capabilities. They military officers also discussed ways of exterminating and eliminating the Al- Shabaab militant group from the Horn of Africa Nation. Moreover, they also deliberated about taking over the overral security responsibilities from the African Union (AU) forces in the country. African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is expected to hand over security responsibilities to Somali government forces by the end of the year 2024. ATMIS previously known as AMISOM has been protecting and providing security to the fragile Somali central government since 2017 and were able to dislodge the Al-Qaeda affiliate group -Al-Shabaab from the capital Mogadishu in 2011. Al-Shabaab is trying to destabilise the internationally backed Federal government of Somalia and impose its own strict interpretation of the Islamic Sharia.
