Somali Parliament Speaker Sheikh Adan Madobe calls for the release of Ex-Alshabab Spokesman Mukhtar Robow

The speaker of Somalia’s Parliament Sheikh Adan Madobe on Wednesday exuded hope that the new government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will secure the release of former Al-Shabaab Deputy Leader and spokesman Mukhtar Robow better known as “Abu Mansur”

Madobe said that the people who arrested and detained Muktar are now no longer in office calling for his immediate release.

Speaking to BBC Somali, Speaker Madobe asserted he is strongly opposed to the continued detention of Robow adding that he was against his initial arrest terming it illegal.

“I was among those who spoke out about his arrest. He was detained illegally.” said the Speaker.

“Now those who detained him are no longer in office and it is my conviction that he will get justice and get back to the society as a free man.” he added.

The former deputy leader of Al-Qaeda-affiliate group- Al-Shabab was arrested in in December 2018 in Baidoa town while campaigning for the South West State Presidency.

His arrest however sparked clashes between his supporters and pro-government forces that left eight people dead.

Muktar defected to the Somali government in 2017 after years of being in hiding in Bakool region and holding clandestine meetings with Somali government officials.

On December 29, Former Somali Acting National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) director Yassin Farey said Robow was in good condition and that the government was spending $7000 every month for his upkeep.

Farey was responding to a request by the Interior Minister Abdullahi Mohamed Nur about the general welfare of Robow after an outcry emerged from his family about his heath status.
