President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has on Thursday spoken with Secretary General Antonio Guterres on further strengthening the partnership between #UN & Somalia at this critical time including in the urgent humanitarian crisis response in Somalia. Somalia is now grappling with the worst drought in decades due to failed rainy seasons. In addition, the socio-economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and soaring global food and fuel prices due to Russia’s war in Ukraine affect large parts of Somalia. Over 7.7 million people require humanitarian assistance, including thousands at risk of famine. UNSOM is currently supporting efforts by the Federal Government of Somalia and federal member states to further improve the security situation, including the implementation of the transition plan from the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) to Somali security forces, as well as reform of the security and justice. The UN is also bolstering by the Somali Federal government to deal with the recurrent drought that is continuing to wresck havoc to the Horn of Africa Nation. The United Nations also took an integral in the recently concluded where it sustained and escalated calls on Somali leaders to pilot the country through the protracted electioneering period and convene elections on time. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency has scaled up humanitarian assistance to thousands of people displaced by ongoing severe drought in across by providing food and other essential needs and helping them get a shelter in the internally Displaced camps.
