Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud holds phone talks with U.S Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held telephone conversation with the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday. The President thanked the US government for its continued support to Somalia in terms of security, humanitarian and politic. Mohamud reiterated his government's commitment to further strengthening ties and working closely with the US government. In a statement posted on Twitter handle, Blinken congratulated Mohamud for being re-elected as the country's 10th for a second term. "Useful call today with Somali President @HassanSMohamud. I congratulated him on his election and affirmed the United States’ support for reconciliation, security, and economic reform efforts in Somalia." read the statement. This is even as President Biden authorized the redeployment of several hundred US troops into the Horn of Africa country to combat against Al-Shabaab insurgency. Biden signed an order to re-deploy U.S. special troops to Somalia amid heightened concerns about Al-Shabab, Al-Qaeda's resurgence in the Horn of Africa Nation grappling with myriad of challenges including drought and budgetary constraints. President Donald J. Trump to withdrew nearly all 700 ground troops who had been stationed in Somalia at the end tsikof his term as a Head of State of the World giant country. The Al-Qaeda affiliate group- Al-Shabaab is trying to topple the internationally backed Central government of Somalia and impose its own strict interpretation of the Islamic Sharia.
