Somalia's Special Envoy for Drought Abdirahman Abdishakur meets with the National Drought Relief Committee in Mogadishu.

Special Envoy for Drought Abdirahman Abdishakur has on Wednesday held his first meeting with National Drought Relief Committee to hear information on drought scale and ongoing emergency efforts to tackle the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country. The committee gave a brief to Abdishakur about the current drought situation in the country and the mitigation and emergency responses they have done so far in combatting with the ravaging effects of drought in the Esrt African Nation. Somalia has been experiencing one of its worst droughts and humanitarian crisis in four decades. United Nations says some 6.1 million people roughly 40 percent of the entire population have been severely affected and 760 000 people have fled their homes. Humanitarian organisations have sounded a warning that without a significant increase in aid, Somalia could soon face the kind of famine witnesses in the country in 2011 when 260 000 people died due to hunger. Abdishakur was appointed to the docket by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to coordinate humanitarian assistance and drought responses in the country. The Wadajir party leader was among the 36 Presidential candidates who contested for the recent presidential election held on May 15 that handed victory to President over the then incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.
