Somalia National Army SNA Gorgor Special Commandos destroy Al-Shabaab hideouts in Barire town, Lower Shabelle region.
Somalia National Army’s special elite forces Gorgor conducted operation to hunt down members of Alshabab insurgents hiding in the farmlands near Bariire town. During the operation, the Army destroyed a boat which militants were using to cross the river and their hideouts. The operation took place on Wednesday may 25. Bariire was one of al-Shabab's strongholds in the south and only 45 kilometers (27 miles) from Mogadishu, the country's capital before August in 2017. In a joint fierce operations with forces of the regional peacekeeping mission, the African Union Mission in Somalia AMISOM now known as ATMIS captured Barrie town in 2019. However, the group has been carrying out incessant on military camps and bases occupied by the African Union Forces and Somali National Army. Gorgor Special Commandos have recently stepped up sting operation against the outlawed Al-Shabab militants who have terrorising locals and planting landmines in Lower Shabelle region which claimed lives of both soldiers and civilians. Al-Shabab insurgents has been a thorn in the flesh for the Somali government since the collapse of the military regime of former President Siyad Barre. The group stills controls large swathes of land in central and southern Somalia. The Al-Qaeda affiliate group is trying to overthrow the internationally backed Federal government of Somalia and impose its own strict interpretation of the Islamic Sharia.
