President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appoints former President Sheikh Shariff Sheikh Ahmed as the special envoy for Somalia - Somaliland talks.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed former President and one of the candidates in the recent Presidential election Sheikh Shariff Sheikh Ahmed as the new special enjoy to spearhead talks between Somalia and Somaliland. The President made the appointment on Wednesday May 25. Somalia and Somaliland have been locked in a decades of long stand-off over Somaliland’s 1991 claim of breaking away from the entire Somalia and declaring itself independent and Mogadishu’s sustained rejection of it. Officials from the two countries led by both Presidents - Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo now a former and Musa Bihi Abdi met in June in Djibouti for face to face talks since Somaliland announced its independence from Somalia in 1991. The meeting however ended unsuccessfull after the two sides sticked to their grounds. However, an agreement was reached not to politicize aid and investment as the two sides planned for other series of meetings. Further negotiations were never held since then as Somalia prepared itself for elections. Somaliland is still not recognized by any country and its constant urge for recognition did not prove futile. Somalia considers Somaliland as a region part of it. Sheikh Shariff who was a President from 2008- 2012 is according to Political analysts poised as the right man to engineer talks that could bear fruits in the coming years. Shariff ran for President in the recent Presidential election held at Afisyoni tent in Mogadishu where he was able to only garner 39 votes and never went through the second round. He supported Mohamud for the remaining rounds giving the second term President an upper hand over the then incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.
