President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed the leader of the Wadajir Party and MP in the Lower House Abdirahman Abdishakur as the Special Envoy to tackle the ongoing drought in Somalia. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made the appointment on Tuesday May 24. Abdishakur has been one of Candidates that contested for the recent presidential election held on May 15 at the Afisyoni tent in Mogadishu. He received 15 votes and was among the contestants that never went to the second round of voting. Abdishakur has also been a member of the Somali opposition presidential candidates along with Mohamud who have been vehemently criticizing the regime of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo. Somalia has been experiencing one of its worst droughts and humanitarian crisis in four decades. United Nations says some 6.1 million people roughly 40 percent of the entire population have been severely affected and 760 000 people have fled their homes. Humanitarian organisations have sounded a warning that without a significant increase in aid, Somalia could soon face the kind of famine witnesses in the country in 2011 when 260 000 people died due to hunger.
