UK Ready to Support New Somalia President and government, Ambassador Kariuki informs UNSC

United Kingdom (UK) government say it is ready to support the new Somalila President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Ambassador James Kariuki, the UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, told the UN Security Council. In his address before the UNSC on Monday May 23, Ambassador Kariuki said that the UK is ready to work closely and foster good relations with the government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. President Mohamud won the presidential elections held on May 15 at the Afisyoni tent near Mogadishu's Aden Abdulle International Airport where 36 candidates contested. Mohamud defeated the then incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo in the third round of voting where he garnered 214 against Farmaajo's 110. During his address, Ambassador Kariuki called on the Somali leaders from across the political divide to work together in the spirit of reconciliation, collaboration and furtherance of development in the East African Nation. President Farmaajo has on Monday handed over all tools of power and documents peacefully to Mohamud in a brief ceremony held at the Presidential Palace.
