Former President Farmaajo hands over files of Somali soldiers in Eritrea.

Former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has for the first time spoken about the controversial Somali soldiers in Eritrea. Speaking during the hand over event, Farmaajo said he hands over the file of the embattled Somali soldiers who were taken for training in Eritrea to the new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. About 5,000 Somali soldiers were recruited and taken for training to Eritrea but were never returned since 2019 Somalia causing an disquiet among the Somali People and also the opposition. Reports of them taking part in the deadly Ethiopia government onslaught against Tigray forces last year have been common place as the opposition accused Farmaajo administration of conspiring with their Ethiopian counterpart for using the Somali soldiers in the war. Farmaajo said that his government wanted to return them home last year but due to the prevailing situation on the ground of the country being in an electioneering period he feared they could get entangled in the political and electoral stand-off and urged the new President to return them as soon as possible. A UN report released last year said the Somali youth were involved in the Tigray fighting alongside Ethiopian and Eritrean forces against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a claim that the outgoing administration rubbished. Today’s handover ceremony precedes the official inauguration ceremony of the new President scheduled for Wednesday 1 June, 2022. Mohamud is now taking over Somalia from President whom he handed over power in 2017 in a similar ceremony.
