Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud holds meeting with AFRICOM Chief General Stephen Townsend
The Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) General Stephen Townsend has held meeting with the new President of Somalia. Gen. Townsend met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in the National capital Mogadishu on Saturday, May 21. The AFRICOM Commander congratulated Mohamud on his recent election victory in the presidential elections held on May 15 at Afisyoni tent in the heavily fortified Halane camp. He also conveyed his congratulatory messages to the people of Somalia, the government, and all electoral stakeholders who endeavoured to make the long overdue elections a success. The US Ambassador to Somalia Larry Andre Jr was also present in the meeting. During their discussions, they agreed to strengthen close cooperation between AFRICOM and Somalia security forces to ensure that the country enjoys enhanced peace and security in the coming years. Notably, Gen. Townsend pledged President Mohamud that AFRICOM would work closely with Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF).
