Somalia receives 35 military vehicles from China

The Chinese government has handed 35 vehicles to Somalia’s National Army, including water, fuel trucks and military ambulances as part of China’s support for the nation’s military.

The vehicles will be used by Somalia’s military to fight the militant group Al-Shabaab who are fighting to overthrow the central government for over a decade.

China also donated 22 mine detectors which were handed over to the military.

“In China we never see ourselves as a donor to Somalia, we see ourselves as a helper and supporter of our Somali brothers and sisters,” the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia FEI Shengchao said.

The Chinese Ambassador to Somalia FEI Shengchao who attended the ceremony on Friday in Mogadishu said his country will continue to support Somalia.

Somalia’s Military chief, Gen. Odawaa Yusuf Rageh thanked the Chinese government for supporting Somalia’s military and said military support is key in fighting the militants.

Relations between China and the Horn of Africa nation have been historically strong and picked up pace after China reopened its embassy 2014.

China has also continued its support to Somalia with humanitarian aid in the health sector.
