Farmaajo to visit Qatar amid ongoing elections in Somalia

Somalia's President Mohamed Farmaajo is expected to visit his strong ally Qatar amid ongoing elections in the Horn of the African nation. Farmaajo is expected to fly to Doha on Saturday, accompanied by ministers and other government officials. During his trip to Doha Farmaajo will meet with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani with whom he enjoys close ties as Doha has become one of the biggest donors in Somalia. Farmaajo's trip comes amid indirect elections for the Lower House and which together sit to vote for the next President. The election for the Lower House was supposed to go on until February 25 extended its deadline to finish voting for the lower house of parliament to march 15. Doha has invested considerable effort into meddling in Somalia’s internal politics and has bolstered its own candidates in Somali elections. In both the 2012 and 2017 elections, Qatari money allegedly played a decisive role in influencing the outcomes.
