Senior Somali Minister harshly engages with UK Lawmaker over Somaliland recognition

A heated controversy on Wednesday sufficed online between a Somalia government Federal Minister and a Member of United Kingdom Parliament over his incessant urge to have the breakaway Somaliland State of Northern Somalia granted international recognition as a fully-fledged country with its established systems.

Gamal Hassan, The Minister for Planning and development in the Federal government of Somalia strongly exchanged hot potato with MP Gavin Williamson, who is from South Staffordshire for plummeting the motion to have Somaliland secede from the rest of Somalia.

In a tough statement on his Twitter handle, Gamal scoffed at Williamson for lacking essential facts while looking back at and divulging the MP's past escapades when he was axed as a minister on grounds that he had leaked crucial information pertaining to UK's National security.

"No, this actually shows your complete ignorance of the situation on the ground.

Someone disgracefully fired from his own gov’t for leaking national security info has no business meddling in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation. Supporting secession only adds insult to injury." said Gamal

On Tuesday Williamson sharply feuded with Vick Ford, UK Minister for African Affairs over the quest for recognition of Somaliland as an independent country. In a strongly-worded statement on his Twitter handle, Williamson took a swipe at Vicky for lacking knowledge about Somaliland squabble with Somalia.

"This shows a complete lack of understanding of the political reality on the ground. It's important for junior ministers to listen to Parliament as it is the role of Parliament to have a say on policy. Yesterday showed there is a broad consensus for UK Gov to recognize Somaliland" he said

Mrs. Ford had said that for Somaliland to be recognized as an independent country then its administration must engage with Mogadishu based Federal government and iron out their internal feuds between themselves.

"Adjournment debate in @HouseofCommons underlines consistent UK government position on Somaliland status.

It is for SL and the Federal Gov of Somalia to decide their future.

We continue to cooperate with Fed Gov of Somalia and SL on democracy, security & prosperity." she noted

Previous attempts to bring together the self-declared autonomous region of Somalia, Somaliland with entire Somalia hit a dead end after Hargeisa stayed put on not engaging with Mogadishu.

This even comes as Somaliland president Muse Bihi Abdi and a high-powered delegation on Tuesday visited Ethiopia to have bilateral and security relations talks and strengthen their cooperation.

Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is a close ally of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and Somalia has been importing Khar from Ethiopia after President Farmajo cut ties with Kenya in 2019.
