Somali FM Holds Telephone Talk With UK Minister for Africa Amid Debate In UK Over Somaliland Recognition
Somalia's Foreign Affairs Minister Abdisaid M. Ali held a phone call conversation with UK Minister for Africa Vicky Ford on Tuesday amid a debate in the UK over Somaliland recognition. According to minister Abdisaid he discussed strengthening cooperation, upholding unity and respecting the independence of the two countries. ''Spoke with UK Africa Minister Vicky Ford about our cooperation on security, economic, humanitarian assistance as well as developments in the Horn of Africa,'' he said. The minister said that Somalia is committed to further advancing bilateral relations with the U.K. based on mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence and unity of Somalia. The telephone conversation comes as the UK parliament today debated a motion to recognize the breakaway region of Somaliland on Tuesday. The motion tabled by former UK defense secretary Gavin Williamson follows growing calls in the UK for the recognition of Somaliland which declared independence from Somalia on May 18, 1991. The UK government is one of the countries helping Somaliland with elections, security and other developmental projects.
