20 more succumb to COVID-19 in Somalia, 348 new cases

The Ministry of Health has announced 348 new cases of Covid-19, bringing total infections in the country to 19583. The new cases are from 3,641 samples tested in the last 72 hours. The total number of recoveries rose to 9,345 after 95 people recovered the virus. Cumulative deaths have hit 1,099 after 20 more succumbed to respiratory disease. The new cases are from Somaliland, 239, Puntland, 70, Galmudug, 19, Benadir, 15 and Jubaland 5. An estimated 186,094 people in Somalia have to date received their first dose of the vaccine and 92,792 have received their second, according to the health ministry. Owing to low vaccination coverage in the country where less than 1 per cent of the country's population is fully vaccinated, the country faces the dual challenge of improving the uptake amongst its general population as well as ensuring an equitable and predictable supply of COVID-19 vaccines to support an effective rollout of mass vaccination.
