US-trained Danab Forces Capture New Areas In Central Somalia

The US-trained Danab forces yesterday captured some key areas in an operation conducted in central Somalia. According to the Somali military, the forces destroyed Al-Shabaab court, training camps and tax offices Gamboole and Fiidow areas in the Middle Shabelle region. “We have completely taken control of some Gamboole and Fiidow areas in which the militants were trying to secure in recent days.,” a military told SNA radio. Danab or “lightning” are Somali commandos trained by the U.S. They have been targetting Al-Shabaab bases in the region, carrying out operations to weed out the militants in central Somalia. Al-Shabaab has been behind hundreds of attacks over the years, including a 2017 bombing in the capital Mogadishu that took some 600 lives, the worst attack in the Horn of Africa country’s history. The group has been fighting in Somalia for over a decade to topple the central government and establish Sharia law understood in their own interpretation.
