Somalia's First Street Basketball Tournament A Hit With Youth

Somalia held its first ever annual 3*3 street basketball tournament to encourage and enable youth to participate in basketball.

Hundreds of Somali basketball lovers thronged Hodan district in the Somali capital Mogadishu to watch the matches.

“It is honor that the first Hoop for Hoop Basketball tournament is held in Hodan district. The mission is to transform the world championship into an outstanding global sport property as we grow basketball,” Hodan district commissioner, Abdifitah Isse said.

The district commissioner also explained that the games offer Somali youth a platform to exhibit their talents.

The tournament is also expected to be held next year in the capital with more teams participating in the tournament.

Basketball is a popular sport in Somalia and has produced laurels for the country including Farhiya Abdi, a Swedish-born Somali professional WNBA player with the Los Angeles Sparks.
