AU fetes military commanders for their distinguished service in Somalia
Two senior military commanders have been feted with medals by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), for their distinguished service in furthering the mission’s mandate. The Deputy Commander of the Uganda AMISOM contingent, Col. John Winston Mugarura and the Commander of the United Kingdom-Mission Support Team (UK-MST), Lt. Col. Edward Fraser, were decorated and awarded certificates, at a ceremony held at the AMISOM Force Headquarters on Thursday, presided over by the AMISOM Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Diomede Ndegeya. The UK-MST provides technical expertise to AMISOM. In his remarks, Lt. Gen. Ndegeya praised the two commanders, for their professionalism, dedication and invaluable contribution to AMISOM, during their tour of duty in Somalia. Lt. Ndegeya described Col. Mugarura, who at some point also served as the Acting Contingent Commander of Ugandan troops in Somalia as a very dynamic and “energetic officer who achieved a lot as a deputy commander.” “On behalf of the AMISOM Force Headquarters, I congratulate you and wish you success in your future endeavors and appointments,” Lt. Ndegeya said at the function held at the AMISOM Force Headquarters in Mogadishu. The AMISOM Force Commander, noted AMISOM benefited immensely, from Lt. Col. Fraser’s vast experience, having served in various places including the UK, Afghanistan and Iraq. “I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you for your good performance and a job well done at the AMISOM Force Headquarters,” Lt. Ndegeya said to Lt. Col. Fraser. He added, “Your honesty, professionalism, experience, flexibility and openness gave you the ability to give appropriate advice to your superiors.” Col. Mugarura, described his tour of duty as a “great learning experience” and hailed the AMISOM military leadership for the support accorded to him, thus enabling him to discharge his duties successfully. “I want to convey my sincere gratitude to you the Force Commander and in particular, the Uganda contingent for the continued support and wise guidance which enabled me to fulfil my assignments,” Col. Mugarura said and thanked the Uganda military and political leadership for the opportunity to serve in the peacekeeping mission. On his part, Lt. Col. Fraser said, “I would like to thank you all for your commitment to the future of a peaceful Somalia. That has been a real inspiration not just to me but also to my team,” Present at the function were the AMISOM Deputy Force Commander in charge of Operations and Plans, Maj Gen. William Kitsao Shume and AMISOM Deputy Force Commander in charge Support and Logistics, Maj. Gen. Gerbi Kebede Regassa, who all spoke highly of the two commanders and the Contingent Commander of Ugandan AMISOM troops, Brig. Don William Nabasa.
