South West Senatorial Polls Set To Kick Off Today In Baidoa

South West State is set to kick off Senate elections on Monday in Baidoa, barely two days after the South West State leader Abdiaziz Laftagareen submitted the list of candidates running for the upper house of the Somali parliament. Southwest Electoral Implementation Committee thanked the leader for submitting the list of candidates for the Upper House of the Somali Parliament. The move was commended by Prime Mohamed Hussein Roble and urged Somalia’s other regional states to follow suit. Each seat will be contested by two candidates. Seat number five has been reserved for women only in an effort to meet the 30% threshold for female candidates. South West is the second regional state to submit and announced the senatorial elections after Jubaland elected senators in Kismayo last week. The Galmudug, Hirshabelle and Puntland states are also expected to submit the names of the candidates and hold Upper House elections in the coming days.
