Somalia misses senate election kick-off
Somalia has once again missed for the third time the much-awaited Senate elections which were scheduled to kick off on Sunday, July 25, 2021. The delay is said to be due to a lack of preparation on the part of the regional administrations. July last month Federal Election Implementation Team (FEIT) released a new election calendar for both. ''In line with its commitment to implement swift, timely, free and fair elections, and the need to kickstart the electoral process without further delay, the Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT) hereby officially announces the final elections timetable in accordance with the 17th September 2020 and 27th May, 2021 policies duly signed by all federal heads of states,'' FEIT said in a statement. According to the calendar, the senate elections was to kick off today and results were to be announced between Sept 20 to Oct 5. According to the May 27 Agreement, 101 delegates will elect one MP meaning 27,775 delegates will elect the 275 MPs. The Federal Member States parliaments will elect the 64 Senators who, together will together with the 275 MPs elect a new president in a joint session..
