Mogadishu stadium fully packed for the first time since 2004

Mogadishu Stadium was jam-packed on Friday, as fans flocked the grounds to watch the clash between Horseed FC and Mogadishu City Club. Over 65,000 people packed Mogadishu stadium for the first time since 2004. The match ended in a draw (0-0). The stadium was reopened last year after it was abandoned due to insecurity. The stadium hosted African Union peacekeepers (AMISOM) from Uganda in 2011, after they chased out the al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab Islamists from the capital. The stadium was handed back to the government in August 2018 and was renovated with funding from Norway and the European Union. More than $2 million was spent in the first phase of renovation, which took in the football pitch, running track and spectator seating.
