Puntland Sentences 8 Al-Shabaab Militants to Death
Puntland military court on Wednesday sentenced eight Al-Shabaab militants to death. The men were accused by the Puntland Military Court of convicted of being belonging to the militant group Al-Shabaab, carrying assassinations and bombings in Galkayo and Mudug region. According to the military court the men carried out killings as part of assassinations. Puntland court mid last month sentenced 17 Al-Shabab militants to death for involvement in the killings of nearly 300 people in Puntland over the past 13 years. The Puntland government argue that the convictions and executions will deal a heavy blow to Al-Shabaab's operations in the region. Al-Shabaab militant group has been carrying out deadly attacks in central and southern Somalia since 2006. The militant group aims to drive out African Union peacekeepers, topple Somalia's government, and impose its strict version of Islam on the Horn of Africa state.
