Al-Shabaab executes 16 people for spying

The Somali-based al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab has executed sixteen for spying in Middle Jubba, Lower Shabelle and Bay regions in the past two days. According to the militant group the people were spying for the AMISOM, Somali government and the United States. Ten of the people were executed in public in Bula-Fulay area in Bay region while the other six executed in Jilib district of the Middle Jubba region. Among the sixteen people executed one is a woman who was identified as Fartun Omar Abkow and accused of spying for the Somali government, the United States and AMISOM. This comes barely less than three days after a military court in northeast Somalia sentenced to death eighteen A-Shabaab fighters but the group termed the execution as a massacre of innocent civilians by the Puntland state. The Somali-based al-Qaeda-affiliated group al-Shabaab has been fighting to topple against the Somali government and African peacekeeping mission forces in Somalia for over a decade.
