Somali military foil suicide car bomb near military base in Middle Shabelle

Somali National Army (SNA) have prevented a suicide car bomb which injured four soldiers near a military base in Middle Shabelle region on Friday morning, officials said.

Somali Military Chief Gen. Odawaa  Rageh said the there were no fatalities as the forces shot a the militant driver of explosive-laden vehicle before reaching the army base.

“Forces Shot at the suicide bomber before he detonated his explosive-laden vehicle outside the Somali National Army base in Biya-cade, Middle Shabelle region," said the Gen. Odawaa  Rageh, who recently returned from an operation he led in areas of Middle Shabelle region.

The Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab group claimed responsibility for the raid in Biyo Adde village approximately 40km east of Mahaday district. It also said they targeted government forces.

The attack comes barely less than four days after the militant group killed at least 15 people in a suicide bombing in the Somali capital that targeted recruits who were lined up outside an army camp.

More than thirty others were wounded including military who were searching the recruits.

Al Shabaab, which wants to unseat the government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law, frequently carries out such bombings.

The Somali military in the past weeks intensified operations against the militant group leaders in the country.
