AU to probe alleged Kenyan airstrikes in Somalia

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said it will launch an investigation into the Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) targeting civilians in an airstrike. In a statement, AMISOM said it will launch an investigation into the incident. ''The Mission is currently engaged in gathering information on the reported incident and we shall work closely with the Federal Government of Somalia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and all other relevant stakeholders as we investigate this matter,'' read part of the statement. Somalia on Friday accused Kenya Defence forces of targeting civilians in an airstrike in villages under Gedo region which killed one person and wounded several others. According to Somalia, its deteriorating ties with Kenya has been contributed by the failure of the Kenyan government’s inability to uphold the standard expected of KDF. “These KDF operations cloaked under a claim of carrying out operations against extremism are undoubtedly conducted in a manner that is bereft of its obligations under the UNSC’s AMISOM mandate,” part of the statement reads.
