Somalia Condemns KDF Airstrikes In Gedo Region
Somalia has accused Kenya of carrying out airstrikes in El Adde and Hisa-u-gur areas of the Gedo in Jubaland. In a statement, the federal government condemned the airstrikes reportedly conducted by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) that resulted in the death of a mother and her child and wounded several other people. ''Civilians and their properties must never be the targeted of the military. The federal government of Somalia has raised this wanton disregard for civilian life and property by KDF, a core obligation of AMISOM, on numerous occasions with the republic of Kenya and the African Union,'' the statement read in part. Somalia also called on AMISOM to fulfil its obligations under paragraph OP18 of UNSCs AMISOM mandate to strengthen uniformity of reporting of civilian casualty and cooperation with the federal government in monitoring ''repugnant and cowardly acts of collective violence against communities'' Somalia severed diplomatic ties with neighbouring Kenya on December 15 after Kenya hosted the President of the breakaway region of Somaliland. The horn of the African nation also accused Kenya of meddling in its regions over its border, while Nairobi has accused Mogadishu of using it as a scapegoat for its own political problems. In May, Somalia restored diplomatic ties with Kenya after it severed relations but days later Kenya suspended flights from Somalia. In later years, Kenya had restricted flight arrivals from Somalia, asking them to first land in Wajir for security checks before proceeding to any other port of call.
