Somalia leaders reach agreement to hold elections – Foreign Minister

Somalia's Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamed Abdirizak has said that three key outstanding issues to complete an agreement were all discussed and agreed upon in principle in the latest poll talks between the federal government and regional state leaders. “The negotiation process has not been easy, and this demonstrates how vital consensus remains, and without consensus how fragile peace in Somalia is, and how fragile our institutions of government remain,” Abdirizak said. “However, we have now reached an agreement that will lead Somalia to free elections, fairer elections.” added. He said Somalia going forward needs to have a predictable transition based on elections that is inclusive, credible, free and fair. The conference was briefed by the head of AU misssion to Somalia James Swan and Francisco Madeira. Both envoys also addressed the UNSC on the latest political, security and humanitarian developments in Somalia as well as the work of UNSOM and AMISOM.
