4 Somali National Killed in South Africa in weekend murder spree — rivalry between extortion gangs escalates

At least four Somali nationals were among 12 people killed by criminal gangs in South Africa in the weekend murder spree According to the police the criminals were vying for a slice of an extortion ring controlled by the Guptas and Boko Haram gangs in Khayelitsha. Khayelitsha Community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson Fransina Lukas said community leaders and residents believed the killing spree was part of “marauding extortion battles” over territory in the area. The four Somali nationals killed were identified as Ahmed Eybakar Omar, Ismail Weydow Omar Sheikh Abdi and Fitah Hassan Nur, Maalim Ibrahim. The gangs have been wielding increasing power — first targeting foreigners for exorbitant protection “fees”, then expanding to include people near taxi ranks. South Africans often accuse foreigners of taking their jobs, a reason they often use to justify attacks against foreigners in South Africa. For years, South African police have been accused of being complicit in attacks against immigrants, something that prompted many immigrants including Somalis to possess illegal arms in a desperate attempt to defend themselves and their properties against gangs. Dozens of Somalis have been killed in South Africa for the past few years.

Many of them have had their businesses robbed and seriously wounded..
