Somalia Restores Ties With Kenya After Qatari Mediation

Somalia has announced it has restored diplomatic relations with neighbouring Kenya on Thursday. Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala, Deputy Information Minister of Somalia, told journalists in Mogadishu that Qatar mediated between the two neighbouring countries. "The Federal Government of Somalia has announced the resumption of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Kenya," Abdirahman said. ''The Somali government thanks the Emir of Qatar for his efforts to mediate the two countries,'' he added. Mogadishu cut diplomatic ties with Nairobi last year over political interference. Somalia in November last expelled Kenya's ambassador and recalled its own envoy from Nairobi, alleging violation of sovereignty and interference in the electoral process in the regional Jubbaland state. Kenya, denied the allegations by Somalia, saying it respects and upholds the cardinal international principles of self-determination, sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity of all countries, and in particular those in Africa. Somalia has also accused Kenya of arming militia operating along with the two countries common borders.
