Qatar special Envoy meets PM Roble & opposition figures
Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble Sunday received in his office the Special Envoy of the Foreign Minister of the State of Qatar for Counterterrorism and Mediation of Conflict Resolution, Dr.Multaq Alqahtani. They discussed strengthening ties between the two countries, the fight against terrorism, and electoral issues in Somalia. ''Prime Minister Mohammed Hussein Robley received the Qatari Foreign Minister's envoy for combating terrorism and mediation in settling disputes, Dr. Mutlaq Al-Qahtani,'' PM Roble said in a Twitter post. ''His country discussed with the Qatari envoy several issues, including strengthening relations between the two countries, combating extremism and terrorism, in addition to the electoral process in Somalia,'' he added. Dr.Multaq Alqahtani also met with members of the opposition candidates discussed the political affairs of the country, especially on elections. Among the members who met Alqahtani included former president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre and Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame. Sources close to the meeting say the Qatari envoy has assured the candidates that his government will be neutral in the country's politics, but his government is committed to supporting the Somali people. Qatar has invested considerable effort into meddling in Somalia’s internal politics and has bolstered its own candidates in Somali elections. In recent years, Qatar has taken a more prominent role in positioning itself as the main backer of the current Somali president.
