Qatar Sends Delegation To Mediate Between Farmaajo & Opposition

The Qatari Special Envoy of the Foreign Ministry of Counterterrorism and Mediation of Conflict Resolution Mutlaq Al-Qahtani is expected to hold talks with various political parties including the opposition, members of the federal government and regional state leaders. Mr. Mutlaq Al-Qahtani will be meeting with members of the council of the presidential candidates tonight at Decale Hotel along with Qatari officials. The exact motive behind the envoy's meeting with the political parties is unknown but his meetings came at a time of rapprochement over the elections. On Saturday Qatar dispatched a delegation led by Mutlaq Al-Qahtani for a two-day visit to Mogadishu to try and broker a deal with Somali political stakeholders over the current electoral crisis. The delegation arrived at the Hargeisa the capital of the breakaway and held talks with Somaliland officials including Muse Bihi based on bilateral ties between Qatar and Somaliland. Qatar has invested considerable effort into meddling in Somalia’s internal politics and has bolstered its own candidates in Somali elections. In recent years, Qatar has taken a more prominent role in positioning itself as the main backer of the current Somali president. Qatar was in the past of supporting incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and the National Intelligence Service Agency (NISA) headed by Fahad Yassin but they have distanced themselves from the claims.
