Somali Parliament Reverses Farmaajo Term Extension, PM Roble Takes Charge of Transition

Somali parliament has voted to roll back a resolution it approved on April 12 to add Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo two more years in office. 140 lawmakers who were present at the Saturday session re-endorsed September 12, 2020, Mogadishu Agreement between Farmaajo and Presidents of Federal Member State. The vote annuls the April 12 unilateral resolution which purported to add Farmaajo two more years in office. During a speech to the Parliament, Somalia's incumbent President, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, granted Somali Prime Minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble the powers to lead preparation, implementation and security of upcoming elections. ''I would like to state that our PM Roble will spearhead the process of preparations and the implementation of the electoral process including key election security arrangements to ensure elections take in a peaceful and stable atmosphere,'' said Farmaajo. Farmaajo also told the parliament to restore September 17 pact. He also said that he decided to seek dialogue to solve the current crisis in Mogadishu adding he will not allow the country and Mogadishu to return to the “ugly path” of 30 years ago.
