UK Hails Opposition To Farmaajo Term Extension, Calls For Poll Talks Resumption

The United Kingdom has voiced concern over the electoral crisis in Somalia and urged Somali leaders to return to dialogue based on the 17 September agreement. In a statement, the UK said it is gravely concerned that failure to move quickly towards elections in Somalia could lead to greater insecurity in Mogadishu and elsewhere in the Horn of Africa country. ''We are gravely concerned that failure to move quickly towards elections could lead to greater insecurity, in Mogadishu and elsewhere, and have serious humanitarian consequences. Violence in Mogadishu has already displaced tens of thousands. Drought compounds the risks to civilian lives and livelihoods,'' the statement read in part. The United Kingdom also hailed Prime Minister Roble and the regional state leaders for opposing mandate extension of incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo. ''We now call on the President and Federal Member State leaders to engage urgently in talks without preconditions. They should come prepared to make necessary compromises and negotiate in good faith,'' The statement further urged all security forces in the capital to refrain from violence and maintain calm.
