Al-Shabab fighters attack military bases
Al-Shabab has attacked two Somali military bases using a suicide bomber along with dozens of heavily-armed fighters in the Lower Shabelle region on Saturday morning.
According to the resident's the suicide bombers detonated bases in Awdhigle and Barire towns which is camp to Somali military before gunmen stormed in and briefly occupied it.
The military recaptured the base after heavy fighting between both sides.
The bases are located approximately 100 kilometres from the capital Mogadishu.
There was no immediate official comment or details on casualties but the Awdhigle district administration said the military repelled the attack in a Facebook post.
Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement saying they “killed 47 soldiers captured and seized the two bases”.
The militants reportedly bombed army bases in Janale, Sabiid and Anole villages.
The group has fought for more than a decade to topple the internationally-recognised Somali government and carries out regular attacks against civilian and government targets, despite losing much of the territory it once controlled..
