Yusuf Haji's Son Becomes Garissa Senator-Elect after Being Left Alone in Race

The late Yusuf Haji's son Abdikadir Haji has been elected Garrisa's senator after becoming the only candidate who had submitted his nomination papers before the deadline.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared him the winner as no one else had submitted nomination papers by March 30, 2021.

“After receiving the nomination papers from only one aspirant, I have forwarded the information to IEBC headquarters for the commission to make a determination,” Garissa County IEBC Returning Officer Hussein Gure said.

The Garissa senatorial by-election was slated for May 18, 2021. However, it will not be conducted as only one aspirant had presented nomination papers as of the March 31 deadline.

Abdikadir, a businessman, first came into the national limelight during the Westgate terror attack in 2013.

He stormed the mall to rescue his elder brother, Noordin Haji, now the Director of Public Prosecutions, who was holed up in the besieged mall.

The businessman, who grew up shooting at the Athi River range, rescued many hostages and was among the key heroes following the attack.

After his election, he now joins a growing list of those who have inherited political seats from close relatives in a trend that cements political families.
