3 killed 5 injured in Mogadishu mortar shell attack
At least five civilians were killed including a father and an infant after a barrage of mortars targeted the UN and African Union peacekeeping mission forces (AMISOM) headquarters in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Thursday. The injuries were taken to a different hospital in the capital for treatment. The targeted UN compound, known as Camp Halane, houses several Western diplomatic missions including those of Britain and the United States. Al-Shabaab militants who are linked to AlQaeda and fighting in the horn of the African nation claimed responsibility for the attack online. The group said they were fighters targeting Halane base camp which houses the UN and African Union with a number of motor shells targeting. Al-Shabaab militants are fighting in Somalia for over a decade to topple the UN-backed government based in Mogadishu. The group was driven from the capital by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and Somali National Army (SNA) but the group still carries out attack in Mogadishu and elsewhere in the country.
