AU troops conclude training to boost relations with local communities
Twenty Ugandan soldiers serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have completed a five day training aimed at enhancing cordial relations with local communities through community initiatives. The training on Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC), jointly organized by the European Union Training Mission Somalia (EUTM-S) and AMISOM also aimed at enhancing the understanding of the participants about the role of CIMIC, in advancing the mission’s mandate amidst the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic. In his closing remarks, Col. Ismail Sendagire who represented the Contingent Commander of Ugandan troops in Somalia, Brig. Gen. Don William Nabasa emphasized the relevance of CIMIC to peacekeeping missions. “Beyond jointly fighting to secure and pacify Somalia, the implementation of selected Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) and initiatives helps to improve lives of the local communities and relations in our area of responsibility,” said Col. Sendagire. He added “As community ambassadors, I implore you to continue practicing good core functions and principles of CIMIC considering the operation environment amidst this COVID 19 pandemic and in line with the revised AMISOM Concept of Operation (CONOPS 2018-2021). He commended the Force Commander of European Union Training Mission Somalia (EUTM-S) Brig. Gen. Fabiano Zinzone for the continued support and partnership with AMISOM, to restore peace and stability in Somalia. On his part, Lt. Col. Matteo Mineo, the EUTM-S Chief CIMIC, who also doubled as the lead trainer, lauded the participants for their discipline and professionalism, exhibited during the training. “Your endeavor to learn during theoretical and practical sessions conducted in the past days was impressive” said Lt. Col. Mineo. He added, “Your commitment and spirit of selflessness will be required to bring this struggle to a triumphant conclusion, in the joint fight against terrorism. We must utterly defeat terrorism.” Lt Col Matteo Mineo also presented a souvenir to Col. Sendagire in recognition of the contribution by Ugandan AMISOM troops to the restoration of peace in Somalia. During the training, the participants were taken through various CIMIC modules and techniques in assessment and reporting, liaison and communication. Other modules included; analysis of quick impact projects, humanitarian assistance, key leaders’ engagement and negotiations.
