Former Somali President laid to rest in a state funeral

Ali Mahdi, Somalia's recently-deceased former President, was laid to rest in Mogadishu on Friday following a state funeral led by president Farmajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble.

The body of the deceased was flown from Nairobi where he died on Wednesday while receiving treatment at hospital after he tested positive for COVID-19.

The late President was aged 82.

The funeral was attended by outgoing Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, former head of states, political leaders and government officials.

“President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo led the nation in giving a heroic State send off to our Late President H.E Ali Mahdi when he joined family, relatives and citizens for national funeral prayers in Mogadishu,” Villa Somalia said in a tweet.

“The President prayed for Allah's Mercy and Jannatul Firdows upon our deceased leader,”

The Somali government announced the flag to fly at half-staff during three days of mourning for the late  former President.

Mahdi served as prime minister of the Horn of Africa country from 1992 to 1991.
