How Thabit Managed To Change BRA's Gender Policy In His 9 Months As Mogadishu Mayor

As the world celebrates the International Women's Day,  in Somalia we remember former Banaadir Governor and Mogadishu Mayor  Thabit Abdi Mohamed and his contribution to enhacing the welfare of women in the post civil war era. Thabit became the Mayor of  Mogadishu on 6th April  2017 and among his first directions was to appoint two female deputies a first in Somalia's history The appointees were 1. Secretary General of Benadir Regional Administration (BRA) & Mogadishu Municipality 2-Maluka Abdikadir Deputy Mayor of finance distrtics He would then appoint 3 District Commisioners in the BRA. The appointees were 1-  Seynab Maxamuud Warsame (Xaabsey)-Wardhigley 2- Seynab Yuusuf Wehliye-Bondheere 3-Rowdo Cabdullaahi Colaad-Wabari Thabit was categorical on why he appointed the female administrators. "Maluka and Zubeida are both high calibre professionals, and we are confident that remarkable change will take place in BRA. Today is a big day for Somali women and we couldn’t be more excited!" Thabit tweeted the day he appointed the fwo female deputies. And years later today Thabit who is the People's Power Party leader recognised the role of the Somali woman in the development of the country. "Happy InternationalWomensDay to every women around the world. You are the bedrock of every nation even at times of unimaginable life challenges that mostly men burden to you. Many thanks for your incredible resilience and courage for making the world a fairer place. IWD2021" Thabit tweeted. Although he served for only 9 months many will say that his contribution towards gender equality set a standard in Somalia's administration history.
