Puntland Closes Borders, Bans Federal Govt Official & "Illegal" Money Ahead of Polls
Somalia's Puntland authority has taken stern measures to avoid "interference" from Mogadishu in the January elections. In a press conference that followed the regional Security Committee meeting in Garowe the regions Interior Security Minister told reporters that federal government officials that include ministers, directors, military officials and Villa Somalia staff will not be allowed in Puntland. Money transfers into the region will be monitored according to Puntland administration. Money suspect to be intensed to influence the polls results will be confiscated, the security committee said. Transfer of cash money through the region's airports will not be allowed Airlines have been ordered to present a manifesto of passengers aboard upon landing in Puntland. The committee has issued restriction on weapon possession. Only military personnel and police will be allowed to possess arms. All public political meetings are now required to be licensed. The Puntland presidential elections are set for January 2019. More than 20 aspirants are contesting to replace Abdiweli Gaas.
