UAE Army Officials In A "Standoff" Over Undeclared Cargo At Bossaso Airport
Somali authorities on Saturday reportedly intercepted several luggages that United Arab Emirates military trainers attempted to load on to an Emirates aircraft at a Bossaso airstrip, local media reports. Airport security reportedly demanded that the cargo be searched before being loaded but the UAE officials according to a source. Puntland authorities however have remained tight lipped over the said incident and an official has denied that there was a standoff at the airstrip. Sources told Radio Dalsan that the aircraft was allowed to depart after a search was done. The incident comes less than a week before a UAE aircraft carrying $9.6M was intercepted at the Aden Abdulle International Airport causing a fresh round of diplomatic row between Mogadishu and Abu Dhabi. Somalia announced this week that it had cut military ties with UAE that include training and paying salaries to its SNA soldiers. However it is not clear whether Puntland regional authorities took the cue from Mogadishu. UAE trains Puntland Maritime Police Forces (PMPF) at the Bosaso.
