Mogadishu Holds First Marathon In 30yrs

Hassan Lidow an athlete and footballer of tge Horseed soccer team beat more than 500 runners to win the first Marathon event in Somalia since the civil war erupted in 1991. The event was to mark the International Sports Day and Somalia Athletics Day and was graced by legendary former 1500m World Champion Abdi Bille, Banaadir Governor Abdirahman Osman and Khadija Diriye Sports Minister. Runners started the course at the iconic Arco De Triumpho Popolare in the city center. Security was enhanced along the running course and the event ended with no major incident. However four hours later two car bombings occured near the start of the course at the KM4-Airport junction and a second at Banaadir junction where 4 militants were killed and three soldiers injured.
