Somaliland Bans Use Of DotSO Somalia Internet Domain

The breakaway region of Somaliland has banned companies and businesses from using Somalia top-level domain code dotSO. In a written letter, Communications and Technology Minister Dr. Abdiweli Abdillahi Soufi says such move could compromise the sovereignty of Somaliland. The letter was addressed to universities, companies, banks public and private organisations All websites that are currently using the dotSO have been given 30 days to move to other domains. The ban comes a day after Somalia reclaimed its Internet country code (dotSO) from a private company which had been managing the service. Somaliland declared its independence in 1991 following the eruption of civil war but has remained unrecognised by the international community. Lately, Somaliland and Somalia have been involved in a tussle over a $1bn Berbera Port Deal which the latter claims is illegal since it was not consulted.
