Somalia Marks First World Tourism Day In 27 yrs Amid Rising Interest By Foreign Tourists

Less than a month since it was admitted as a member country in the World Tourism Organisation Somalia on Wednesday joined the rest of the world to mark the World Tourism Day. The Ministry of Information Tourism & Culture in collaboration with Somalia Tourism Association commemorated the day with an event held at Mogadishu's Jazeera Hotel. "Somalia is strategically located and has plenty beautiful tourist places on earth" Abdulrahman Osman the Minister for Information Culture and Tourism told the gathering at the colourful event. With normalcy slowly but steadily returning to Somalia after 27 yrs of civil war records show a rise in tourists coming to Somalia albeit a small size as compared to Pre -War. A UK based tour agency told Radio Dalsan that more western tourists are seeking to visit destination Somalia. "We have hosted this year alone more than 20 guests from Europe North America and Asia" Hassan Nur a tour agent working for the UK based Untamed Borders Tour Agency told Radio Dalsan . "This year we arranged for a British tourist named Andrew Dury to visit Somalia for the third time. Andy liked Mogadishu for his first trip so he decided to visit Mogadishu this year again" Hassan told Radio Dalsan. The Briton was accompanied by two German journalists who were documenting him as a tourist spending his holiday in Somalia's capital Mogadishu. "We also hosted for the first time a group of European tourists in Mogadishu. This group were 8 guests from Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Britain, and Italy. This group arrived on 22nd April 2017" Hassan told Radio Dalsan.   According to Untamed Borders most of their clients interested in touring Somalia are from Germany, USA and Britain. Before the war Somalia with its sandy beaches, wildlife, culture attracted many western tourists. This is the first time that Somalia is marking the World Tourism day in 27 years
