Farmaajo's Medical Surgery Donation Raises Questions Over His Salary
Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has announced that he will donate his salary to towards the medical expenses of at least 100 patients awaiting eye surgeries. State owned news agency SONA which reported the development did not however clarify what percentage of the President's salary was to be donated. Somalis on the internet were quick to question what amount the president was to donate to the eye surgery patients. The head of state salary has been shrouded in secrecy in the present and past administrations. In a country ranked as one of the most corrupt in the world past administrations have been known to withdraw from the coffers of treasury without consent of the Finance Minister. It is this past experience of fraud that has made many critics seek to know much about the finances coming I and out of the Villa Somalia. Radio Dalsan seek to know directly from Villa Somalia how much the president takes back home and according to Farmaajo's Communication head he receives an estimated USD 9000 a month as his salary. Among the beneficiaries of the corrective surgery include a 79 years old Mother Fadumo. "Thank you Farmaajo you're decision today to change our lives reflects your unflinching commitment to put Somali people your top priority" she said. "You are fulfilling yet one more campaign promise to the Somali people" Fadumo added. Bashir Dhore a Somali living in Minneapolis however is pessimistic about Farmaajo's gesture. "Why didn't he donate his salary before he came to the office ?" Dhore asked on a Facebook comment. "We need to investigate where this money is coming from" he said.
